Topic: "The Bible and the Question of Truth" Luke Timothy Johnson is one of our country’s most prominent scholars of the New Testament

Luke Timothy Johnson is one of our country’s most prominent scholars of the New Testament.  Born in Wisconsin in 1943, as a young man he was an ordained member of a Benedictine monastic community for ten years.  Having received dispensation from his vows in 1972, he is now a lay person in the Catholic Church.  After earning his doctorate at Yale University in 1976, he taught New Testament courses at Yale Divinity School until 1982 and for a further ten years at Indiana University before becoming the Robert W. Woodruff Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, in Atlanta.

Professor Johnson is a prolific scholar, having written twenty-five scholarly books and more than forty scholarly articles.  One of his best-known publications is The Writings of the New Testament: An Interpretation (2nd ed., 1998), widely used in colleges and seminaries.  A number of his other works are commentaries on books of the New Testament, including a two-volume commentary on Luke-Acts for the Sacra Pagina series (1991 and 1992) and ones on the Letter of James and the First and Second Letters to Timothy for the Anchor Bible (1995 and 2001).  His most recent commentary is on the Letter to the Hebrews, part of the New Testament Library series from Westminster/John Knox Press (2006).  Much of the research for these works was done while he was on regular research fellowships, including three from the Lilly Endowment and one from the Catholic Biblical Association.  In addition, Professor Johnson is a frequent contributor to more popular journals such as Commonweal and The Christian Century and a member of the editorial boards of The Journal of Theological Interpretation and The Bible Translator: Practical Papers.   Johnson is also well-known for his excellence in the classroom, for he has received major awards for outstanding teaching both at Indiana University and the Candler School of Theology.

Professor Johnson and his wife Joy have been married since 1974.  He is the stepfather of six children and the father of one.
